Karana
How to read it
CountHalf a tithi
Based on11 names
- One tithi contains two karanas
- Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija and Vishti are the repeating names
- Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimstughna are the fixed names
- Vishti is shown with a Bhadra mark on the daily Panchang
Because a karana is half a tithi, the karana usually changes before the tithi does. The daily Panchang prints the name for the current half. Garaja is the spelling used on that page. When the name is Vishti, the same card adds a Bhadra mark, and the day’s guidance asks to avoid an important new start in that half.
Open today’s Panchang for the karana in force. This page lists the names. It does not replace the day’s calculation.
